DEEJAY x DANCER
Nick Power
Inspired by the legendary block parties of 1970’s New York, Sydney-based choreographer Nick Power (Two Crews, Between Tiny Cities) pays tribute to hip hop’s origins. Featuring world champion turntablist DJ Total Eclipse (AB Original, Hilltop Hoods) with 3 of Australia’s most respected Breakdancers, Deejay x Dancer walks the tightrope of live performance in a thrilling call and response showdown. Lining the edge of the stage the audience will be brought in close to the action to create a powerful and intimate space, highlighting the skill, playfulness and connection between these two traditional hip hop artforms.
Commissioned by Sydney Opera House for New Work Now, where it premiered to critical acclaim in August followed by a sell-out season at New Annual Festival Newcastle, Deejay x Dancer is available for touring in 2023 and beyond.

Reviews
“In Demi Sorono, Jackson Garcia and Anastasios Repousi we knew we were getting three of Australia’s most energetic and exciting street movers. Yet the choreography by Nick Power still created almost unbearable tension, as Eclipse slowed his output to single, sparing beats, and the trio stared and stalked him like they were in the opening round of a boxing match. Then joyous release as a beat proper kicked in and these three displayed their impressive arsenal of movement” – Sydney Morning Herald (Full article)
“This playful, intimate dance work pays tribute to hip hop’s origins in a thrilling call-and-response showdown featuring the world champion turntablist DJ Total Eclipse … Deejay x Dancer is a rousing celebration of the intricate interplay between DJ and dancer, and how they intuitively react and respond to each other in the heart-racing heat of the moment.” – Theatre Travels (Full article)
“Locals! I can’t recommend this show enough!! Honest, cranking street moves dusted with a contemporary brush by the genius of Nick Power and his brilliant dancers and DJ!!! So simple and powerful. A rare treat!!! It was like being on a dance floor, but sitting!!” – Wollongong audience member
